Dauphin County Chief Clerk Chad Saylor Appointed County Commissioner After Unanimous Vote from County Judges
Dauphin County is announcing the appointment of Chad Saylor as County Commissioner, filling the vacancy from former Commissioner Jeff Haste’s retirement on May 31.
Saylor has served as Dauphin County’s Chief Clerk for the past seven years and also served in that capacity from 2004 to 2011.
Saylor will be formally sworn in by President Judge John F. Cherry at the Board of Commissioners’ weekly meeting on June 9. Saylor will sit with Commissioners Mike Pries and George P. Hartwick III for the 10 a.m. workshop session.
For anyone interested, Saylor will be available after the meeting to speak with reporters.
Following Haste’s retirement announcement in May, President Judge Cherry accepted applications for the vacancy until May 25.
Interviews were conducted June 7, followed by a unanimous vote for Saylor from the panel of County Judges.
“I am honored and humbled to be selected as Commissioner Haste’s successor,” Saylor said Tuesday. “I look forward to working alongside Commissioners Pries and Hartwick and continuing the teamwork that has produced 16 years without an increase in property taxes.”
Per the Pennsylvania County Code, county commissioner vacancies (with unexpired terms) are filled by the Court of Common Pleas. Specifically, the code states:
“Section 501.(b) Any casual vacancy in the office of county commissioners shall be filled, for the balance of the unexpired term, by the court of common pleas of the county in which such vacancy shall occur by the appointment of a registered elector of the county who was a member of the same political party as the commissioner whose place is to be filled at the time the commissioner was elected.”
The Commissioners’ Office is making no further comments on the appointment, or the selection process, at this time. Additional discussions – including restructuring of the board – are expected at the June 9 meeting.
