Honoring our fallen heroes this Memorial Day and every day.
The Dauphin County Veterans' Affairs Office connects veterans and their families to the social services they may need, including education, medical services, or housing. The Office also serves as an archive of military history for Dauphin County dating back to the American Revolution, the Civil War and other conflicts. In addition, the Veterans' Affairs Office coordinates special honors and ceremonies to commemorate veterans.
Each year, the Dauphin County Veterans' Affairs Office identifies and commemorates nearly 23,000 veterans with an American Flag. The flags are placed on or near the grave markers of veterans who served this country. Veterans of Vietnam, Korea, World War II, World War I, the Civil War, the Revolutionary War and others will be honored.
Citizens who are interested in obtaining an American flag marker for a deceased veteran who is buried in Dauphin County should contact their local veterans organizations, or call Dauphin County Veterans' Affairs Office at (717) 780 6356 for more information.
Veterans Retraining Assistance Program
In an effort to reduce veteran unemployment, the VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 was passed and signed into law last November. Included in this new law is the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) for unemployed veterans, which will begin on July 1, 2012 (applications will be accepted beginning May 15, 2012).
This program is jointly administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Labor (DOL). Upon signing up, an individual will be prompted to provide his or her first name, last name, and email address. Once submitted that person can expect to receive six to seven emails about VRAP, including notification on when applications open.
VRAP offers 12 months of training assistance to veterans who:
- Are at least 35 but no more than 60 years old
- Are unemployed
- Received an other than dishonorable discharge
- Are not be eligible for any other VA education benefit program (i.e. - the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Assistance)
- Are not in receipt of VA compensation due to unemployability
- Are not enrolled in a federal or state job training program
Eligible participants will receive up to 12 months of training assistance at the full-time payment rate under the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty program (currently $1,473 per month). DOL will offer employment assistance to every veteran who participates or applies to the VRAP program. To learn more about VOW and VRAP visit www.benefits.va.gov/VOW.
