Sunday, May 18: Flower Walk: Jack in the Pulpit

1:30 - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center

Join volunteer Cara Martinez-Williams for a Sunday afternoon flower walk at Wildwood Park . White continues to be the predominant flower color in this late spring walk. Some colors are beginning to appear. We should definitely see Jack in the Pulpits. Come learn the interesting facts about this flower and why it could also be known as "Jill in the Pulpit". Free, pre-registration is not required .

Monday, Tuesday May 19, 20: Canoe Wildwood by Moonlight

7-9 p.m., meet at the Turtle Parking Lot on Industrial Road

One hundred years ago when Wildwood Lake first appeared as a result of construction of the dam, boating was a popular pastime. Canoe Wildwood participants will learn how time has changed the lake and the park. We will paddle into the aquatic ecosystem for a close-up look at the inhabitants of the lake and marsh. During our excursion, we will experience that magical moment when the sun is gone and the moon rises over the lake. Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. $10 per person includes the use of canoes, paddles and life jackets. Pre-registration is required. Saturday, May 31: Blues, Wine & Arts Festival

1 - 9 p.m., Fort Hunter Park, rain site Scottish Rite

The first inaugural Blues & Wine Festival at Fort Hunter Park will feature national recording artists along with Pennsylvania 's elite blues artists and bands. Also for the wine enthusiast, you can relax and listen to music while strolling throughout the beautiful park to visit and taste some of Pennsylvania 's finest wines our region has to offer. Bring a lawn chair and blanket, no outside food or alcohol will be allowed in at the gate. There will be limited space for 10' x 10' canopies. $20 advanced purchase, $25 at the gate.

Tuesday, June 3: Edible Plants

6:30 - 8 p.m., Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Early summer is a fun time to get to know wild foods. This session covers wild edible plant identification, poisonous plants, collection techniques, and preparation tips. Class and edible sampling will begin inside followed by an outside walk to discover edible, medicinal and poisonous plants. For ages 12 and up. Mornings are a great time to see birds. This is when they are most active during the warm summer months. Come join us as we explore the Delta Boardwalk and Wildwood Way Free. Pre-registration is not required. These walks are not appropriate for large groups.

Sunday, June 8: Tour de Belt Bike Ride

10 a.m., begin at former State Hospital grounds

The Capital Area Greenbelt Association will host its 7th Annual 20-mile guided bicycle ride on the Greenbelt to celebrate National Trails Day. The event, for families and bike enthusiasts, generates community interest and raises funds for completion and maintenance of the Greenbelt, a 20-mile park system circling Harrisburg and its municipalities. Wildwood Lake Sanctuary, Harrisburg River Front and Five Senses Gardens are but a few of the many sights along the way. Two rest stops with restrooms, snacks, bananas and water are provided. Fundraising prizes will be awarded to those individual riders or teams collecting the most pledges. The event is held rain or shine. Free t-shirts for all riders. $15 adults before May 23, $25 adults after May 23, $7 children 12 and under, any time. Saturday, June 14: Fifth Annual Wildwood Lake Sanctuary Triathlon

8 a.m. - 12 Noon, meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

This activity is a great way to kick-off Father's Day weekend. Athletes of all ability levels are encouraged to join us for this event that will emphasize fun and personal achievement. Teams of two will participate in three events that include biking 1.5 miles along Wildwood Way, canoeing 0.5 miles on Wildwood Lake and running 1.5 miles on the Towpath. Challenge yourself to do your personal best. Prizes donated by local businesses will be awarded to the top finishers in each age category. The first 60 registrants will receive a free commemorative t-shirt. All participants will be awarded a ribbon and certificate of achievement. Refreshments will be provided at the post-race gathering. $10 per person, $20 per team, includes entry fee as well as the use of canoes, paddles, and life jackets. Pre-registration is required. Saturday, June 14: Harrisburg Pipe and Drum Festival

10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Fort Hunter Park

The Scottish Society of Central Pennsylvania hosts the 7th Annual Pipe and Drum Festival featuring a Drum Salute Competition, Solo Bagpipe Competition, performances by The Harrisburg Scottish Country Dancers, The McGinley Irish Dancers, The Zembo Highlanders Pipe Band and The Guilford and Glencoe District Juvenile Pipe Band. Gift and food vendors and Clan tents also will be on hand. Bring blankets or lawn chairs. Free, no registration required.

Saturday, June 14: A Mid-Summer Night's Tales

7 p.m., Fort Hunter Centennial Barn

Summer solstice honored in storytelling, This popular annual show features traditional and original stories for young and old in an informal, round-robin get-together. $5 adult; $2.50 children 12 and under, no registration required.

This is a camp for nature explorers ages 7 to 9. Science exploration, environmental education activities, crafts and nature observations are on the daily agenda. Friday, June 20: Wading Birds of the Susquehanna Canoe Trip

9 a.m. - approximately 3 p.m. (8:45 a.m. check-in) Meet at the PA Fish and Boat Commission Boat Launch north of Fort Hunter Mansion and Park, canoe to West Fairview.

Spend a day on the Susquehanna River. Experience the sights and sounds of Wade Island , which hosts a rookery for endangered great egrets and black-crowned night-herons. Learn about these birds from biologists who have studied on the island for the past two years. Participants will enjoy lunch on a river island. A limited number of canoes, paddles and life jackets will be available for use by participants. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. $20 per person includes canoes, paddles, life jackets, shuttle service, guest speaker, safety boaters, and lunch. There will be a fee of $10 per person for those using their own canoe or for a third person in a canoe. Pre-registration is required. Register by mail or by calling (717) 221-0292.

Sunday, June 22: Peaking of Flowers Walk

1:30 - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Join volunteer Cara Martinez-Williams for a Sunday afternoon flower walk at Wildwood Park . Lizard's tail, water lilies, yarrow, moth mullein and chicory are just a few of the many flowers blooming in June. Learn how these and other flowers were named and some of their uses by early settlers and Native Americans. Free, pre-registration is not required.

Wednesday -Thursday, June 25 - 26: Educator Workshop: WILD About Watersheds

Wed. 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center on Wildwood Park . Thurs.8 a.m. - 4 p.m., meet at the PA Fish and Boat Commission Boat Launch north of Fort Hunter Park.

Join us for a 2-day workshop to explore the Susquehanna Watershed! The first day will include classroom and hands-on activities that can be done indoors or outdoors with students to help them learn about watersheds. The second day will "immerse" participants in the watershed as they canoe on the Susquehanna River. We will stop at different locations to learn about Native Americans along the river, and about the reintroduction of shad, bald eagles and peregrine falcons to the watershed. We will also survey aquatic insects to evaluate the quality of the water. Lessons are aligned with State Environment and Ecology Standards. Pack a lunch and plenty of drinking water and dress for outdoor activities. Act 48 hours are available. $25 per person includes two days of instruction, educational materials, guest speakers, canoes, paddles, life jackets and shuttle service. Pre-registration is required. Sunday, July 6: Discovery Walk

1 - 2:30 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

A naturalist will lead an interpretive outdoor walk for children leading through the wetlands and forests of Wildwood. Appropriate for ages 5 - 10. Free, pre-registration is required. Register by calling the Olewine Nature Center at (717) 221-0292. Not appropriate for large groups.

Tuesday -Friday, July 8 - 11: Science Series: Herps, Streams, Birds, and Wildlife

9 a.m. - 12 noon, meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Children ages 9 - 12 can sign up for one or all of these outdoor field study classes. Sessions will be hands-on and have a strong identification and ecology component. Participants should bring a water bottle and wear shoes appropriate for hiking. $10 per participant per class, pre-registration is required. Call the nature center at (717) 221-0292.

Tuesday, July 8- Herps

Herps are reptiles and amphibians. Learn about Wildwood's herps with this class leading us through the wetland trails for observation, study and data collection.

Wednesday, July 9- Stream Exploration

Students will learn how to collect and identify aquatic organisms to measure the environmental health of a stream. Wear closed-toed shoes appropriate to get wet.

Thursday, July 10- Birds

Discover the diverse world of birds! Learn bird identification for beginners, enjoy the great trails in search of birds, and have fun. Binoculars provided.

Friday, July 11- Wildlife

This fun new program is for those who enjoy hiking, looking for wildlife, and learning about the fascinating creatures who call Wildwood home. Enjoy a 3.5-mile discovery walk around Wildwood Lake . Discover the more remote areas of the park and their inhabitants with a naturalist guide. Bring a backpack with a trail snack and a water bottle.

Wednesday, July 9: Educator Workshop: Pennsylvania Songbirds

9 a.m. - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Wildwood Park will be offering a summer PA Songbirds teacher workshop. This workshop will introduce teachers and youth leaders to a hands-on curriculum supplement that contains background information and activities on topics including songbird biology, migration, habitat, and identification. Pennsylvania Songbirds: A K-12 Teachers' Guide to Activities in the Classroom is a joint project of Audubon PA, the PA Game Commission and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Participants will receive the curriculum book filled with many wonderful lesson plans and ideas. This workshop is Act 48 hours approved. Bring your own lunch and an afternoon snack will be available. $10 per person, funded in part by a grant from the PA Outdoor Writers Association, pre-registration is required. Become more comfortable in the outdoors with this exciting week of hands on survival activities and lessons. Participants, ages 13 and 14, will gain an understanding of outdoor skills and primitive technologies through personal experience. Activities will include canoeing, orienteering, natural history and ecology lessons, poisonous and edible plant knowledge, animal identification, team building and primitive skills development such as shelter and fire making. $100 per person, pre-registration is required. Join volunteer Cara Martinez-Williams for a Sunday afternoon flower walk at Wildwood Park . Two species of jewelweeds, teasel, Joe-pye weed, pokeweed and bee balm are but a few of the flowers that may be in bloom. We will continue to learn how these flowers were named and some of their early and even modern day uses. Free, pre-registration is not required.

Saturday, August 2: Invasive Plant Seminar

9:30 a.m. - 12 noon, meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Invasive plants are those that grow aggressively, spread, and displace other plants. Volunteers at Wildwood Park have been putting forth great effort to replace invasive plants with native plants and improve wildlife habitat. Enjoy an indoor program on local invasive plants, problems, and solutions, followed by a 1-mile plant walk. Learn how to prioritize problem species and create a land management plan. Interested in hands-on removal of invasive plants? Join us Saturday, August 9th for the Volunteer Work Day. No experience is necessary and these programs are open to the public. $5 per person, pre-registration is required.

Sunday, August 3: Insect Ramble

1 - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Discover one of nature's best wonders - insects! Experience the fields and forests with a naturalist in search of these fascinating creatures. Ages 6-12. $5 per child, pre-registration is required.

Wednesday, August 6: Educator Workshop: Wildlife Forensics-CSI for the Classroom

9 a.m. - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

The PA Game Commission and Wildwood Park will once again offer this summer workshop that will focus on techniques and activities that teachers can use to bring wildlife crime solving into the classroom. Crime scene television shows are at an all time high and using science and clues to solve crimes is a great way to get students involved in both the sciences and the environment. Determining time of death, identification of animal species, tracking, forensic entomology and collecting evidence are all topics that will be explored. All the forensic activities will be correlated with the appropriate environment and ecology standards. Participants should expect to be involved in hands on activities both indoors and outside. Rain gear and comfortable walking shoes are a must. Remember to bring a lunch, snacks will be provided. This workshop is Act 48 hours approved. $10 per person, funded in part by a grant from the PA Outdoor Writers Association. Pre-registration is required. Deadline for registration is July 25, 2008. Friday, August 8: Educator Workshop: Thwarting the Litterbug:

Simple Ways to Make Your Life Greener

8 a.m. - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

The PA Resources Council and Wildwood Park will offer a new educator workshop that will focus on easy steps people can take to improve the environment. What happens to that candy wrapper once it leaves your student's hands? Solid waste management is a topic that touches on renewable and non-renewable resources. In this workshop, educators will receive litter and recycling information for their classrooms and learn how to "green" their lifestyle. Lessons are aligned with State Environment and Ecology Standards. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to participate in indoor activities as well as an outdoor cleanup and walk. Bring a lunch; snacks and beverages will be provided. Act 48 hours are available. $10 per person; funded in part by PRC, pre-registration is required. Call the nature center at (717) 221-0292. Join volunteer Cara Martinez-Williams for a Sunday afternoon flower walk at Wildwood Park . Rose mallows on the North Boardwalk may be seen along with New York ironweed and great lobelia. Common ragweed, responsible for a great deal of allergic response, will be identified in many places along the trail. Free, pre-registration is not required.

Saturday, August 23: Girl Scouts-Juniors Finding Your Way Badge Workshop

10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m., meet at the Olewine Nature Center in Wildwood Park

Maps tell us so much more than just which road to take. Girls will become familiar with different types of maps, learn to use a compass and trail markers, create their own mini-trail and navigate a course in the park using a compass. $10 per Scout (includes badge), payment must be received with registration.
