Friday on the Susquehanna

Friday, June 4th

We will start the day on Haldeman Island with a morning bird walk (about 1 mile of walking) led by Scott Bills of the Pa Game Commission. Along the way, he will discuss reintroduction of bald eagles to the river. After eating lunch on the island, we will shuttle to Halifax, where we will launch canoes for a trip down the Susquehanna. In the afternoon, we will take a break at one of the River Trail Campsites. Bring water and a lunch. Snacks will be provided. A limited number of canoes, paddles and life jackets will be available for use by participants. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
When and Where: 9am until approximately 4pm (8:45 check-in)
Meet at Haldeman Island.

Fee: $30 per person includes canoes, paddles, life jackets, shuttle service, safety boaters and guest speaker. There will be a fee of $20 per person for those using their own canoe and $10 for a third person in a canoe.

Full Moon Float Trip

Friday, June 25
This canoe trip will explore the susquehanna river near Halifax. We will canoe to an island where we will build a camp fire and roast marshmallows for s'mores. Then we will paddle to the take out in the moonlight. This trip is for people who have some canoe experience. A limited number of canoes, paddles and life jackets will be available for use by participants. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
When and Where: 6:30pm - 10:00pm

Fee: $20 per person includes canoes, paddles, life jackets, shuttle service, safety boaters and snack. There will be a fee of $15 per person for those using their own canoe and $10 for a third person in a canoe.

Islands of the Susquehanna Canoe Trip

Thursday, July 8
The river is dotted with islands that make it an interesting place to canoe and provide great habitat for birds and wildlife. We will stop to see Wade Island, a nesting site for great egrets, black crowned night herons and double-crested cormorants. At the conclusion of the trip, Mike Hendricks of the PA Fish and Boat Commission will talk about reintroduction of American shad and release some hatchery fry. Bring a lunch to eat at an island along the way. A limited number of canoes, paddles and life jackets will be available for use by participants. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Historic Canoe Trip

Saturday, August 7
Learn about the history of the Susquehanna river and its early inhabitants. On this canoe trip from Fort Hunter to West Fairview, historian Peter Seibert and archaeologist Joe Baker will share stories and information on the geology and history of the area. Lunch will be served on a river island. A limited number of canoes, paddles and life jackets will be available for use by participants. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Petroglyph Canoe Trip

Thursday, September 23
Join us for a beautiful fall paddle on the Susquehanna River below Safe Harbor Dam. With local petroglyph expert Paul Nevin as our guide, we will paddle to several small islands to view ancient rock art. On our last stop, we will see if any of the petroglyphs align with the setting sun on the equinox. We'll paddle to the take-out by the light of the full moon. sign-up today, space is extremely limited.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to space limitation and logistics all participants must use Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Canoes.
