Area Agency of Aging

With the widest variety of volunteers in the county, the Area Agency for Aging has a multitude of volunteering opportunities. These include programs such as Meals on Wheels, Ombudsman, Sunshine Line, Friendly Visitor and several more. Aging welcomes volunteers who are interested in aiding the elderly of the community.

Opportunities:
Apprise
The State Health Insurance Assistance Program for all Medicare beneficiaries and Pennsylvanians age 60 and over. Volunteers undergo free training in Medicare and health insurance in order to aid and counsel elderly individuals. They assist and provide information on the easily confusing Medicare system.

Requirements/Special Skills: Undergo free training through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging in Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Supplements, Appeals, Fraud and Abuse, Long term Care Insurance and prescription drug coverage.

Chore Service
Volunteers will make themselves available to elderly individuals who have requested assistance with burdensome tasks that they cannot complete due to physical inabilities. These tasks range from snow shoveling to lawn work to moving items or furniture. The variety of tasks is limitless and often involves physical activity.

Requirements/Special Skills: Ability to aid in physical tasks.

Friendly Visitor
Volunteers make regular visits to elderly individuals who are lonely and isolated. They develop companionship with the individual, playing games, talking and interacting with them on a regular basis. They bring interest, information and activities to the older person.

Requirements/Special Skills: Patience and a desire to interact with and bring friendship to lonely persons
Current Need: Volunteers always needed.
Meals on Wheels
Volunteers deliver weekly meals to homebound individuals in a certain area. Meals are delivered to a central location in the community where the volunteer will pick up the meals and then deliver them to agency clients on a predetermined route.
Hours/Days: At least one weekday a week, every week.
Amount of time required: A minimum of 45 minutes.
Location: Your community
Requirements/Special Skills: Community oriented and the ability to deliver meals to the homes of the elderly.
Current Need: Volunteers always needed.
Ombudsman
Volunteers are community neighbors who are specially trained to find answers and resolve problems people experience in the long-term care system. They provide information and support to individuals under long-term care and also act as an advocate working to have the highest level of care delivered to the individual.

Requirements/Special Skills: Must go through ombudsman training.

Senior Centers
Volunteers aid with center programs, help facilitate meals and activities, and interact with individuals at the centers. Volunteers help at one of the 19 senior centers in Dauphin County.

Requirements/Special Skills: Desire to aid and interact with senior citizens
Current Need: Volunteers always needed
Sunshine Line
Volunteers make telephone calls to lonely elderly individuals bringing them conversation and information that they would not be able to otherwise receive. The regular telephone calls of volunteers to persons who have limited outside contact brings friendship and interest to a weekly routine.

Requirements/Special Skills: A desire for conversation and friendship
Current Need: Volunteers always needed.
Transportation
Volunteers act as drivers or dispatchers for one of ten Dauphin County transportation groups that bring no-cost transportation to the seniors of their community. Dispatches coordinate rides and keep records/information on where individuals need to go. Drivers drive 7-12 passenger vans taking seniors to various locations.
Hours/Days: Varies - Typically 4-6 hours one day a week.

o Able to drive a 7-12 passenger van
o Have a good driving record
o Know your community
