April 20, 2012 - Free Garden Faire at Fort Hunter Park

HARRISBURG, PA (April 20, 2012) – Celebrate spring at Dauphin County’s free Garden Faire from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6 at scenic Fort Hunter Park.

Enjoy lively music and dancing, blooming plants, tasty foods, exhibits, a variety of crafts and Victorian cake walks.

A variety of colorful annuals, herbs and old-fashioned perennials will be available for purchase. Knowledgeable gardeners will also be on hand to offer gardening tips. Craft vendors will offer garden wares, soaps, accessories, jewelry and more. Guests can also see the art of tatting, early photographs and Victorian jewelry made from hair, fossilized coal, gold and silver. The Paxtang Art Association’s show and sale will be featured, once again, at the event.

Visitors can glimpse into many aspects of Victorian life. They can try on a corset or cage crinoline and dress up in 1860s garb provided by the Victorian Dance Ensemble and dance to live music provided by the Susquehanna Travellers, a four-piece ensemble specializing in Civil War and Irish music. The Pennsylvania Bakery will sponsor this year’s Teapot Cake, which one lucky guest will win.

The Society for Creative Anachronism (Shire of the Blak Rose chapter) will perform the colorful May pole dance and invite guests to join in. Children can try walking on stilts, making a mini-garden, painting a mural and visit with a dairy maid and more.

Inside the Tavern, visitors can enjoy leisurely dining in an early 1800s room filled with flowers. A tasty lunch, with overstuffed pretzel sandwiches, fruit and pasta salads and dessert, will be served. The food stand at the Barn will offer traditional American fare.

In case of inclement weather, some outdoor activities may be canceled. After Garden Faire, the Mansion will be open for guided tours for a minimal fee. Group rates are available with advance reservations.
