Preparedness

Preparedness

Preparedness is knowing the warning signs and what to do during an emergency. A fire drill is an example of preparedness.

Preparedness includes plans or preparations made to save lives and to help response-and-rescue operations. Evacuation plans and stocking food and water are both examples of preparedness. Preparedness activities take place BEFORE an emergency occurs.

Several steps can be taken by you to prepare for such emergencies. Knowing your neighborhood's emergency evacuation routes and having a preset destination are examples of preparedness. You can also assemble a disaster-kit. If you need to evacuate or are asked toEMA Preparedness "shelter in place", having some essential supplies on hand will make you and your family more comfortable. These kits should include any "special needs" items, first aid supplies, change of clothing, sleeping bags, battery powered radio or television with extra batteries, food, bottled water and tools. It is a good idea to include some cash and copies of important family documents (birth certificates, passports, licenses, etc.) in your kit.

An example of Dauphin County Emergency Management Agency's role in preparedness is the bi-annual Three Mile Island disaster drill. Dauphin County EMA also assists the local municipalities, school districts, and others with the preparation of plans that are required by State and Federal Laws
