When To Call 911
Remember, 9-1-1 is for Emergencies Only!
9-1-1 is used to help citizens with POLICE, FIRE, or MEDICAL emergencies when an immediate response is required. What constitutes an emergency? Here are some general guidelines for appropriate calls to 9-1-1:
- When a life-threatening medical or traumatic injury exists.
- When a fire is burning somewhere that it shouldn't be or smoke is coming from an unknown source.
- Incidents with the release of potentially hazardous substances.
- Active police events such as robberies, shootings, fights, and any other act that could endanger the public.
9-1-1 is for Life or Death situations. Ask yourself, "What is the level of urgency? Is there a danger to life or property?" If the situation seems urgent and there is a potential of escalation by not making the telephone call, dial 9-1-1. When there is any doubt or uncertainty, call 9-1-1. A trained 9-1-1 telecommunicator will assist you with whatever your problem is and can refer you to another agency or phone number when necessary.
If you call 9-1-1 by accident do not hang up! Stay on the line and tell the telecommunicator that everything is all right. If you do not stay on the phone the telecommunicator may think someone needs help and will dispatch a police officer.
