This summer we have experienced extended periods of above-average temperatures and/or humidity levels causing the heat index to climb dangerously high. Dauphin County residents are urged to stay inside air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, keep pets and small children out of vehicles and in shaded or air-conditioned areas, as well as keeping them well-hydrated, and to check on elderly or disabled neighbors, family, and friends to ensure they are also keeping cool and not suffering any ill-effects from the heat. If you suspect someone is suffering from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, seek emergency attention immediately.

Also, be advised that the temperature inside a vehicle can increase to unsafe levels in a matter of a few minutes, even with the windows open several inches; never leave children or pets inside vehicles.
