Recycle Old TVs at Dauphin County Center
Thursday, June 11, 2009
HARRISBURG—June 11, 2009 – On the eve of the switch from analog to digital broadcasting, Dauphin County Commissioners Jeff Haste, Nick DiFrancesco and George Hartwick III remind county residents that they can recycle old and unwanted televisions for free at their new, permanent electronics recycling center.County residents are encouraged to drop off their outdated analog televisions and other recyclables Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The center is also open one Saturday a month from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., beginning in August. These Saturdays include Aug. 1, Sept. 5, Oct. 3, Nov. 7, and Dec. 5.
Located off S. Cameron St. near the Steelton-Harrisburg border, by the Harrisburg Incinerator, the center offers a convenient drop-off location for old TVs and other electronics, such as computers, answering machines, cell phones, copiers, pagers, radios, CD players, printers, print cartridges, telephones, typewriters and compact fluorescent light bulbs. The center also offers confidential paper shredding for $5 per box.
“Please don’t throw your old TV at the curb,” Haste said. “We have provided this benefit for Dauphin County residents and we encourage them to use it, for the sake of the environment. E-cycling conserves our natural resources, saves our dwindling landfill space, and protects our water and soil from contamination with dangerous chemicals.”
The new facility, which opened April 20, takes the place of the twice-a-year, one-day collection drives held at the Harrisburg Area Community College. Seeing the demand for these programs, the commissioners decided to open a recycling center for residents year-round.
Dauphin County residents can recycle their electronics for free. All in-county businesses and out-of-county residents and businesses are charged a small fee for each electronic recyclable item. A medium-sized TV costs $20 to recycle for out-of-county residents.
For more information, please call the recycling center at (717) 982-6772.
