Volunteer Opportunities
Dauphin County Prison
The Dauphin County Prison currently has several active programs run by volunteer groups and organizations. These opportunities range from religious organizations to reading and writing classes to special agency sessions. Volunteers are encouraged to work with these existing groups when deciding to work at the prison. There are also competitive internship positions available to college and university
students.
Area Agency for Aging
With the widest variety of volunteers in the county, the Area Agency for Aging has a multitude of volunteering opportunities. These include programs such as Meals on Wheels, Ombudsman, Sunshine Line, Friendly Visitor and several more. Aging welcomes volunteers who are interested in aiding the elderly of the community.
Cooperative Extension and Community and Economic Development
Penn State's Cooperative Extension provides meaningful opportunities for public involvement in the community. Through programs such as 4-H and the Master Gardeners, individuals can take part in educational and creative activities.
Herbert Schaffner Youth Center
The Herbert Schaffner Youth Center has several opportunities for volunteers interested in working with youth. There are community programs, skill sessions and seminars, and educational field trips that interested individuals, who have followed the necessary steps, can take part in.
Waste Management
The Dauphin County recycling and waste management programs provide the area with much needed recycling and waste cleanup services. Volunteers are able to engage in cleanup and yearly events that brings these services to the community.
Parks and Recreation
The parks of Dauphin County have a variety of recreational programs and activities available to the public. Community volunteers assist with almost all of the activities and maintenance at
the County park facilities. The large variety of opportunities includes educational groups, park maintenance and care, staffing and a lot more.
Mental /Health /Mental Retardation does not use volunteers due to the large amount of training that is required but they are able to direct individuals to a number of related volunteer organizations.
Children and Youth
Children and Youth has several hundred volunteers that take meaningful action aiding the younger persons of Dauphin County. Volunteers interact with youth in a variety of different programs.
Victim Witness Program
The Volunteer Program has created a list of volunteers to assist Spanish speaking crime victims who don't speak English in the Dauphin County. Also, the volunteers participate in various community events in order to raise awareness and expand services to Latino crime victims and their families.
