County Advisory Committees

Ag Land Preservation Board - Works to protect viable agricultural lands by maintaining conservation and stemming development. The Board assesses farm eligibility for conservation easements and determines the quality and level of agricultural areas. Consists of 7 members including local farmers, a commercial building contractor, and local government representative. Meetings are held on the 2nd Friday of the month beginning at 8:30AM in the Dauphin County Agricultural and Natural Resources Center. Contact Robert Christoff at 717-921-8100 for more information.

Council on Aging - Assist and advise the Dauphin county Commissioners in all matters relating to the Area Plan of Service to the Aging. This includes, but is not limited to, assessing the needs of older persons, assisting in the development of the annual service plan, and developing ways to use community resources. Consists of 19 members who have knowledge and experience dealing with the older persons and the issues pertaining to them. Meetings are held at least 6 times a year. Assessment Appeals Board - Hears assessment appeal valuation cases and sets the tax roles for the Commissioners along with determining the market values used in assessment. Consists of 4 members, one of which is a solicitor. Meetings are held monthly with additional meetings taking place when required. Contact Laurie Rux at 717-780-6102 for more information.

Children and Youth Advisory Board - Assist and advise the Board of Commissioners and the Administrator of Children and Youth in providing and promoting the welfare and protection of the children and youth in the County and in performing any other related functions that may be assigned. Consists of 9-13 members (11 currently) chosen from various religious, professional, industrial, educational, cultural, and racial groups. Meetings are held at least 6 times a year. Conservation District - Establishes the direction and policy of the Conservation district focusing on the management of the soil and water concerns within the County. Consists of 7 members. Cooperative Extension - An affiliate of Penn State University. It provides various programs to the community such as the 4-H program for youth, the Master Gardeners, and regular series of informative lectures, seminars and classes. Consists of multiple individuals with experience in this area. Individuals elected at an annual meeting. Contact Jane Landis at 717-921-8803 or click here for more information.

Dauphin County Department of Drugs and Alcohol Service - To reduce the incidence and minimize the costs associated with the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. This is done by determining the need for drug and alcohol services, aid in preparing a multi-year plan and other pertinent responsibilities. Consists of 11 members with at least 1 member from each of the following 5 fields, criminal justice, education, health care, drug and alcohol service recipient and human services. Fort Hunter Board of Trustees - Oversee the operation and improvement of the Fort Hunter Museum which has been designated as a memorial to Margaret Wister Meigs. The Board oversees and manages the trust fund on behalf of the county for the Fort Hunter Park. Consists of 7 members who are involved with Fort Hunter. General Authority - Created to acquire, hold, construct, improve, maintain, own, and lease any and all projects and holdings of the County. Consists of 5 members appointed by the Commissioners. Meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Contact the Authority at 717-985-1627 for more information.

Library System - Operates the public library system, striving to assure public access to information and materials that educate, enrich, enlighten and entertain. The Board of Trustees consists of 17 individuals, 12 of whom are elected and 5 who are appointed by the Commissioners. Interested individuals may become members by making an annual voluntary contribution. Board meetings are held at noon on the third Tuesday of each month at various libraries. Mental Heath and Mental Retardation Advisory Board - Works to develop, together with the Administrator, continuing plans for the program, to make recommendations to the County Commissioners regarding the program and any other matters relating to mental health and mental retardation services in the County, including purchase of service, contracts and funds required to implement the program. The Board also reviews the performance of the MH/MR program and recommends a system of program evaluation. Consists of 10 members drawn from many different community groups that are focused on mental health. Meetings are held every other month. Parks and Recreation Advisory Board - Provides community input and guidance to parks and recreation programs and facilities. Consists of 5 to 7 members actively involved in Dauphin County Parks. Meetings are held as required. Contact Carl Dickson at 717-599-5188 or click here for more information.

Herbert A. Schaffner Youth Center Advisory Board - Promotes the proper management of the Center and to promote the principles of the Balanced Approach to Restorative Justice. This is done by making recommendations to the Commissioners, renewing the budget and advising the Director. Consists of 2 standing members and 11 appointed members. Solid Waste Advisory Committee - Promotes an effective Solid Waste Management Plan and advises the County with recommendations when necessary. Committee meets as needed. Planning Commission - Tasked to prepare and maintain a county comprehension plan, review all subdivision and land development plans proposed to the County and advise the Commissioners in determining the best development plans for the County.
